Inflation falls to lowest level since March 2022, but food remains expensive

Inflation, which measures the change in consumer prices of a certain basket of goods, marked a slight decline in July this year, falling to 4.2%, the lowest level since March 2022, when sharp appreciation began due to of the consequences of Russia's attacks on Ukraine. Inflation peaked in October 2022 at 8.3% to come to a gradual decline, mainly influenced by the drop in fuel prices.

Despite the slowdown, food, which occupies the main weight of the budget of Albanian families, has continued to become more expensive, affecting most of the inflation. Foods are 9% more expensive than last July, influenced by vegetables and potatoes, which cost 21.6% more, as well as milk and eggs, by 13.6%. The high flow of tourists seems to have also influenced the price of entertainment, with prices 9.5% higher.

INSTAT reported that the annual change in the consumer price index in July 2023 is 4.2%, a year ago this change was 7.5%. The monthly change of the consumer price index in July 2023, compared to June 2023, is -0.1%.

The annual increase in prices in the month of July was mainly influenced by the group "Food and non-alcoholic beverages" with +3.20 percentage points, followed by the group "Furniture, household appliances and home maintenance" with +0.44 percentage points. Prices of the "Rent, water, fuel and energy" group with +0.26 percentage points. Prices of the group "Hotels, cafes and restaurants" with +0.23 percentage points. "Entertainment and culture" group awards with +0.22 percentage points. The prices of the "Miscellaneous goods and services" group increased by +0.21 percentage points. The prices of the "Alcoholic beverages and tobacco" group increased by +0.19 percentage points. The prices of the "Clothing and shoes" group increased by +0.16 percentage points. The prices of the group "Educational service" with +0.06 percentage points. "Health" group prices with +0.05 percentage points. The prices of the "Communication" group contributed with +0.04 percentage points.
