Bars and restaurants have been a favorite business for Albanians, but this model has faded in recent years for two reasons.
First, the pandemic in 2020 hit this activity hard. Second, the lack of labor and the decline in consumption as a result of immigration are having a more lasting negative effect.
According to INSTAT data, in 2020, for the first time in a decade, Albanians reduced spending on bars and restaurants, and this was normal due to restrictions as a result of the pandemic.

Në krahasim me 2020-n, të ardhurat e këtij aktiviteti u rritën me 17%, por ato mbetën 9% më të ulëta sesa para pandemisë. Të dhënat tregojnë se deri në vitin 2019 shpenzimet në bare e restorante ishin rritur me shpejtësi, duke kulmuar në 52 miliardë lekë (430 milionë euro) në 2019-n. Jo vetëm shpenzimet e qytetarëve për bare e restorante janë ulur. Biznesi i bareve nuk duket më aq tërheqës. Të dhënat e INSTAT tregojnë se numri i ndërmarrjeve që veprojnë në akomodimin ushqimor është ulur vazhdimisht që nga viti 2016, kur arriti në gati 19 mijë. Ndërsa një pjesë e kësaj tendence lidhet me hapjen e zinxhirëve të mëdhenj të bareve, nga viti 2019 ka rënë edhe numri i punonjësve. Në 2021-n kishte 14.7 mijë punonjës, që është numri më i ulët që nga viti 2014. (Të punësuar gjithsej, numri mesatar vjetor, Shërbimi ushqimor).
Rënia e biznesit të bareve e restoranteve ka sjellë edhe tkurrje të fitimeve. Norma e fitimit për sektorin e akomodimit ushqimor ishte 13.6% në vitin 2021, nga 25.1% në 2011-n. (shiko grafikun: Norma e fitimit, Shërbimi ushqimor).
According to the Association of Bars and Restaurants, the decline in the activity of the sector has continued in 2022 and the beginning of 2023 and is related to several factors such as curbing demand due to rising prices and especially the high level of immigration, mainly of young people.
The sector is also struggling to find the workforce and recently the Association has stated that around 15,000 employees are needed.
The Association of Bars and Restaurants earlier claimed to the Monitor that since 3 months, due to the acute shortage of manpower many service establishments are looking for employees from the Philippines.
For the return to normality of the sector, the association asserts the necessity of filling 15,000 vacant jobs.
