Italy approved this Friday the draft law which prohibits the production and placing on the market of "animal meat consisting of or produced from cell cultures or tissues derived from vertebrate animals, as well as the prohibition of the name meat for processed products containing plant proteins". .
As published by the ANSA news agency, the Italian government forwarded the measure "accompanied by a letter informing the European Commission that the draft law had been approved.
The attitude of the Italian government towards cultured meat has been known for some time. Already in March, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, Francesco Lollobridgeta, had spoken against cultured meat, while only a few weeks ago he had emphasized that "'meats' produced in the laboratory risk undermining Italian culture, identity and civilization".
In Europe, the Netherlands has already approved meat farming since July.
