Lithuania is the happiest country in the world, but only for young people under 30 years old
Lithuania is the happiest country in the world for under 30s - or Gen Z, according to the World Happiness Report 2024.
The reasons are three: low house rents, free university and good night life.
Lithuania was ranked 19th overall, but secured first place in the ranking for the happiness of under-30s.
And the Guardian reports that factors such as low rent, free education and vibrant nightlife are understandable factors in terms of happiness.
Lithuanians under the age of 30 rate themselves at 7.76 out of 10 on the happiness scale. In comparison, those in the same age group in the US rated themselves at 6,392 out of 10, placing the US 62nd globally.
Gantas Bendikas, 23, told The Guardian he will graduate debt-free. Meanwhile, in the US, the average student debt is about $39,000, according to Experian.
Rents are also low – according to Eurostat, Lithuania is one of the cheapest countries in Europe to rent a house.
Jolita Vaitkutė, 28, told The Guardian: "When I talk to friends in other places - Paris, Tokyo, London - I realize how lucky I am to have my own space to live alone and freely," she said.
According to The Guardian, home-studio spaces in the Vaitkuta building cost the equivalent of $109 to $544 a month.
This allows those involved in the arts to flourish in Lithuania.
