Are you located in Turkey and Instagram is not working for you? Turkey has blocked it and is clarifying the decision
If you're in Turkey on vacation and your Instagram isn't working, no one in that country has access.
Popular social media platform Instagram has been blocked in Turkey, the country's Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) said on Friday, without giving a timeline for how long the ban would be in effect.
Access to the Instagram mobile app has also been blocked.
The ban comes after a Turkish official criticized the platform for blocking condolence posts over the killing of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh earlier this week.
The website of the BTK states: 'Instagram.com has been blocked by the decision of the Information and Communication Technologies Authority dated 02/08/2024 and number 490.05.01.2024.-608983.
The move comes after Turkey's Communications Chief Fahrettin Altun criticized Instagram for blocking condolence posts over the death of Ismail Haniyeh - the head of Hamas' political bureau who was killed in an airstrike in Tehran on Wednesday.
Hamas immediately blamed Israel for the attack and declared Haniyeh a martyr.
'No matter how many Palestinians Israel kills, the just cause of Palestine will not be erased from history,' Altun said on Wednesday, following the news of Haniyeh's death.
"I also strongly condemn the social media platform Instagram, which prevented people from publishing messages of condolence for Heniyeh's martyrdom without any justification," he continued. 'This is a very clear attempt at censorship.'
