Why is nobody talking at BAFTA about intimacy directors?

"Thank you for existing in our industry, for making the space safe. For creating physical, emotional and professional boundaries so that we can work without being exploited or abused in the process", these were the words of Michaela Coel, when she won a BAFTA for her role in the drama I May Destroy You in 2021.

She dedicated her award to Intimacy Coordinator, Ita O'Brien.

Why is nobody talking at BAFTA about intimacy directors?

An intimacy coordinator or intimacy director is a film or television crew member who ensures the well-being of actors and actresses participating in intimate scenes.

Some are involved in a project from the start, helping shape the scripts and actions on set with emotional safety in mind.

Mikaela's speech was heartfelt, but it was also to point out that there is no category that recognizes the work of these directors.

And two years after this statement, directors of intimacy are still not recognized at BAFTA.

Why? Nobody knows. And that's exactly why world-renowned filmmaker and 'new porn' pioneer Erika Lust is calling for BAFTA and the Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to introduce a new category: Best Intimacy Coach in a Motion Picture.

Almost every movie we watch has some kind of intimate scene between the actors.

Erika emphasizes: "If something happens during filming, we stop filming. That's the first rule.'

There's also an anonymous questionnaire that actors can fill out afterwards if there's anything they're not entirely happy with after the shoot.

In short: a lot of work and care goes into making sure someone feels comfortable on set.

Isn't it about time these people behind the scenes were recognized for their work?
