Biden condemns the assassination of Trump and calls him privately
President Joe Biden has condemned the assassination of Donald Trump, calling on all Americans to condemn such "sick" violence.
The US president called for unity after a gunman shot Trump in the ear, killed one in the crowd and wounded two others at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The gunman was killed by Secret Service agents.
In a statement released within an hour of the attack, Biden said there was "no place in America for this. We must come together as a nation to condemn it. It's sick, it's sick."
The attack came amid a heated election race between the pair, laden with personal insults and profanity.
"We cannot allow this to happen. We cannot be like this. We cannot accept this," he added.
He said he was "grateful to hear Trump is OK. I'm praying for him and his family and everyone at the rally. Jill [Biden] and I are grateful to the Secret Service for their response."
The White House later said in a statement that Biden had also spoken by phone with his Republican rival. Meanwhile, Biden's campaign managers said they were pulling the TV ads as soon as possible after the assassination of Trump.
