Bill Gates says this is the biggest problem facing today's youth
Bill Gates spends much of his time and money trying to help solve some of the world's biggest problems – from climate change to poverty. A big problem has prevented him too.
"The misinformation is where I, I had to kick back and say, 'OK, we've handed this problem over to the younger generation,'" Gates says.
Misinformation is becoming more common, as technological advances such as AI chatbots make it easier to generate and quickly spread lies.
Fifty-five percent of Americans said the U.S. government and tech companies should act to limit false information online, in a 2023 survey by the Pew Research Center.
Gates, the subject of numerous conspiracy theories, is likely more familiar with disinformation than he would like to be. But a conversation with his daughter Phoebe further opened his eyes to the severity of the issue, he says.
Gates, the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft, will address the topic in a five-part Netflix documentary series called What Happens Next? The Future with Bill Gates,” due to premiere on September 18. In a preview of the series, Gates tells his daughter that he feels bad that there isn't an adequate solution to slow the spread of misinformation.
