CNN: US-made ammunition was used in the Israeli attack on Rafah

Ammunition made in the United States was used in the deadly Israeli attack on a civilian camp in Rafah on Sunday, according to a CNN analysis of the scene.

The tail of a US-made GBU-39 small diameter bomb (SDB) was seen from the analysis.

The GBU-39, manufactured by Boeing, is a high-precision munition "designed to attack targets of strategic importance," explosive ordnance expert Chris Cobb-Smith told CNN.

However, "the use of any munition, even of this size, is always going to have risks in a densely populated area," said Cobb-Smith, who is also a former British Army artillery officer.

At least 45 people were killed and more than 200 others were injured in a fire that broke out after an Israeli army attack on the outskirts of Gaza's southernmost city.

Most of the victims were women and children.

Israel's escalating assault on Rafah, where some 1.3 million Palestinians are taking refuge, has been condemned internationally, with United Nations agencies, aid groups and multiple governments calling on Benjamin Netanyahu to immediately halt the offensive.
