Catastrophic failure at Research Center kills approximately 21,000 fish

About 21,000 fish have died at a University of California research and care center after what the school called a 'catastrophic failure'.

"The loss appears to have been due to exposure to chlorine, to which the fish are particularly sensitive," the research center said in a statement.

The institution is still investigating what went wrong. An independent external investigation is also underway.

The researchers were investigating how 'environmental stressors' could affect different fish species, including green and white sturgeon and chinook salmon - some populations of which are at risk.
