Saturn icy moon can be a 'secret' oceanic world, host to life

Saturn's innermost moon, which resembles the Star Wars Death Star, could be a "secret" oceanic world, according to a new study.

Mimas, which is the smallest and closest to Saturn, is one of the 82 moons of the besieged planet and is claimed to contain a liquid inner ocean.

The study was published last week in the journal Icarus.

Mimas was first discovered in 1789 by English astronomer William Herschel as a small point near Saturn. The Voyager spacecraft photographed the small moon in 1980, and NASA's Cassini mission conducted its flights while studying Saturn between 2004 and 2017.

The Moon is only 115,000 miles (186,000 kilometers) from Saturn and takes just over 22 hours to complete an orbit around the planet. Mimas is covered with craters, but the largest is 80 miles (130 kilometers) wide and gives the moon its unique Death Star appearance.

Scientists have long been intrigued by Mimas because it is likely to have been made almost entirely from ice. Craters scattered across the moon suggest that its surface has remained frozen for a long time.

"But apparently Mima's surface was deceiving us, and our new understanding has greatly expanded the definition of a potentially habitable world into our solar system and beyond."

Researchers believe that a phenomenon called tidal warming allows the underground ocean to exist in Mimas.

Tidal warming causes an internal increase in temperature on the moon due to its gravitational relationship with the planet.
