Nine days trapped in the mine, the two Korean miners survived only on coffee

Two miners spent nine days trapped in a collapsed zinc mine in South Korea, living on coffee grounds. So with unboiled coffee.

The men, aged 62 and 56, managed to light a fire inside to keep warm and made a plastic tent.

200 meters underground since October 26.

President Yoon Suk-yeol called their rescue something miraculous. After discharge, they were taken to the hospital, but they are fine.

How did they survive for 9 days without food?

Authorities said the miners survived by drinking water that dripped from the ceiling and using coffee grounds instead of rations.

The rescue operation began on Thursday when emergency workers drilled a hole and inserted a small camera to try to find the miners. They were found sitting side by side for warmth, in a wide room where several mine shafts met.

The granddaughter of one of the survivors described how after coming out, her uncle did not recognize her when, because she had put on an eye mask after 9 days of being in the dark.

She described his rescue as 'surreal'.
