European Council President Charles Michel has canceled his speech at the opening of a trade fair in Shanghai because Chinese authorities intended to censor him.

The video of the speech was ready to be broadcast during the opening of the international exhibition on Friday, but the broadcast was interrupted.

"The Chinese wanted to remove part of Charles Michel's speech. Brussels preferred to cancel the broadcast of the speech in its entirety," said a diplomat on condition of anonymity.

According to sources, Chinese authorities wanted to remove references to the crisis in Ukraine from the speech.
