Xi Jinping wins a historic third term as president of China
China's leader Xi Jinping has secured a historic third term as president.

It follows a consolidation of power that has made Xi, 69, China's most dominant leader in generations.

The approval of Xi's appointment at the National People's Congress (NPC) ceremony was expected and premeditated, as the leader has sidelined potential political rivals and filled the top ranks of the country's ruling Communist Party with supporters since taking power in 2012. The vote for him in the National People's Congress was unanimous, 2,952 votes in favor and none against.

The members of this Congress are appointed by the ruling party.

Xi has strengthened his rule as China reopens from its zero-Covid policy that has fueled anti-government protests. The country is also facing a declining birth rate that threatens its engine of economic growth.
Ties between Beijing and Washington remain strained, highlighted recently by allegations that China had spied on the US in balloons.
