Borrell signed! Here are the new ambassadors and envoys of the EU in BP
The General Secretary of the EU's External Action Service, Stefano Sanino, has sent the list of ambassadors and special envoys, who were appointed by the chief diplomat of the European bloc, Josep Borrell, to the member countries.
Radio Free Europe has provided this list and it can be seen that a rather large change has also been made in the positions related to the countries of the Western Balkans region. This list is expected to be made public soon by the EU's External Action Service. As part of the rotation in the diplomatic posts of the EU, the current facilitator of the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Miroslav Lajcak, has been appointed by Borrell as the ambassador of the European Union in Switzerland.
In this list, there is no name of Lajcak's successor in the role of the EU's special envoy for dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia. For this, the External Action Service of the EU, in cooperation with the member countries, is expected to decide later, preferably during the summer. The mandate will also end for the head of the EU Office in Kosovo, who is also the EU Special Representative for Kosovo, Tomas Sonyong.
In his place, the EU Office in Pristina will be led by the current ambassador of Estonia to the EU, Aivo Ora. The future head of the EU Office in Kosovo has experience in the Balkan region, having previously served as the head of the EU delegation in North Macedonia and as the head of the EU delegation in Montenegro. Within this rotation, the Italian diplomat, Luigi Soreca, has been appointed head of the EU delegation in Sarajevo, which, in addition to Kosovo, is also a higher position than that of ambassadors in other countries of the region, as it has the status of the EU Special Representative.
During his diplomatic career, Soreca was the ambassador of the European Union in Albania. The current EU ambassador in Sarajevo, Johann Sattler, will remain in the region, as Borrelli has appointed him as EU ambassador to Montenegro. The ambassador of the European Union in North Macedonia will be the Greek diplomat Rokas Michalis. Until now he has been the ambassador of the European Union in Mexico.
Among the officials who have had positions related to the Western Balkans is the one Angelina Eichhorst has had until now. She is managing director for Europe at the EU's External Action Service. Earlier, she was deputy managing director and her office was engaged in the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, before Lajcak was appointed as a special envoy for dialogue.
Angelina Eichhorst has been appointed ambassador of the European Union to Egypt. From the list of those appointed by Borrell, it can be seen that the great majority of them are either diplomats of the member countries, or officials of the External Action Service of the European Union. Although foreign policy continues to be the national competence of the member states, the European Union has a common foreign and security policy, and a fairly large diplomatic service around the world.
