Monkey pox: Is there a vaccine and which countries are supplying it?

A growing number of western countries are facing an unusual outbreak of monkey pox, a virus associated with the smallpox that is usually confined to Africa.

The virus which is less deadly than smallpox usually lasts two to four weeks and symptoms can appear anywhere from five to 21 days after infection.

Symptoms of appendicitis usually begin with a mixture of fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, exhaustion, and swelling of the lymph nodes.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an existing smallpox vaccine is "at least 85 percent effective in preventing monkeypox."

Although smallpox became extinct in 1980, vaccine stockpiles have been maintained around the world to protect humans against a possible renaissance.

How many vaccines against monkey pox are there?

There are currently two US-licensed vaccines used to protect people against smallpox: ACAM2000 and Jynneos - also known as Imvamune or Imvanex.
