"Nile fever" has returned to Albania. So far, it is reported that there are 17 infected and 3 victims.
Nile fever is spread by mosquitoes that feed on the blood of birds. The virus does not spread from person to person.
The head of the Communicable Diseases department at the PIH, Mrs. Silva Bino, issued a press release, where she confirmed the news and announced that the situation is under control and that measures have been taken by the municipalities to disinfect the areas.
"This summer has had few infections, there has been an increase in cases of Covid and the occurrence of Nile Fever. For Europe, this summer is filled with several types of infections. This is related to the movements of people. We had an outbreak in 2011, 2017 and 2018, we have 17 cases, one resident in Lushnja, 19 possible cases, those affected have not only clinical signs and serological examination, 84% tests were performed during July, there are 64 suspected cases. Nile fever circulates in birds but affects horses. There are 3 cases of death, fever is a disease that passes easily in young people, after the age of 60 or in people who have damage to the immune system, forms affecting the nervous system appear. We have communicated with the municipalities about the disinsection of the area", said Bino.
