For Europe only a few refugees are worth rescuing

For Europe only a few refugees are worth rescuing

By Slavoj Zizek / After the Russian attack on Ukraine, the Slovenian government was ready to host thousands of Ukrainian refugees. As a Slovenian citizen, I felt proud, but also ashamed. When Afghanistan fell to the Taliban in August 2021, the Slovenian government refused to host the Afghans, saying they had to stay in their country and fight. Also a few months ago, when thousands of Iraqi-Kurdish refugees sought to enter Poland from Belarus, Slovenia said Europe was being attacked and offered military support to Poland's cowardly efforts to keep them away.

On February 25, a Slovenian government tweet clarified how things were going: "Ukrainian refugees come from a different cultural, religious and historical environment than where Afghan refugees come from." Then this message was deleted, but the embarrassing truth was clear: Europe must be protected from non-Europe.

This attitude will lead the continent to disaster. The media and European elites are portraying the war in Ukraine as a conflict between a "progressive" Western camp and a Russian "Eurasian" camp, ignoring the rest of the world. China itself is not yet ready to support Russia, but it has its plans. After the start of the war, Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a message to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un stating that Beijing was ready to cooperate with Pyongyang in "this new situation." The fear is that China could use this "new situation" to invade Taiwan.

The disturbing fact is that the radicalization in which we are participating, as in the case of Vladimir Putin, does not remain just rhetoric. Many on the left were convinced that Putin was playing the bluff when he sent troops to the border, and everyone expected the Russian army to occupy only two "popular republics" controlled by Kremlin-backed separatists, or worse, to invade. the entire Donbas region. Now someone who defines himself as a leftist (I would not dare) accuses the West of why US President Joe Biden was right about Putin's intentions.

The argument is well-known: NATO is encircling Russia, inciting uprisings in the former Soviet republics and ignoring the reasonable fears of a country that in the last century has been attacked by the West. Of course there is something real in this interpretation, but it is the same as justifying Hitler by blaming the Versailles treaty. Even more serious is the assumption that the great powers have the right to have their own spheres of influence and everyone else must accept this fact for the sake of global stability. It is the same idea that Putin has, convinced that there was no other solution but the invasion of Ukraine.
