Cindy Crawford: What I expected to hear from my mother after my brother died

Guest on the Kelly Corrigan Wonders podcast, supermodel Cindy Crawford spoke about one of the biggest losses in life, perhaps the biggest loss, that of her little brother.

Jeff Crawford died in 1974 when he was only 4 years old due to leukemia.

Cindy was 9 years old at the time.

She shared how she and her two sisters, Chris and Danielle Crawford, have lived for years with survivor syndrome, an aspect of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder that is experienced when you feel unwell because you have overwhelming feelings of guilt over tragedies that have happened to others.

“Our father had always wanted a son before Jeff came along. When the much-desired son of the family fell ill, we were overcome with guilt. All three of us had the same nightmares. The three of us thought for years that one of us had to die. We were waiting to hear from the mother the words: We are sad that we lost our son, but we are happy to have you," Cindy tells of the words she never heard from her mother, who had lost her son and was poisoned.

For years now, in memory of her brother, Cindy has been continuously engaged in the fight against leukemia, a cause that her daughter Kaia Gerber also has close to her heart.
