French actress Juliette Binoche broke down in tears as she handed an honorary Palme d'Or to beloved Hollywood icon Meryl Streep.

"Meryl, you have changed the way women are viewed in world cinema. You have also helped me to see it from a different angle because love prevails over everything and you prevailed over us," said Binoche.

Streep made her first Cannes appearance in 35 years.

She and Binoche together declared the Cannes Film Festival officially open.

Streep recalled the last time she was in Cannes, "I was already a mother of three children, I was about to turn 40, and I thought my career was over."
