Why will YouTube restrict access to fitness videos for teenagers?

European teenagers may notice a change in their recommendations on YouTube, after the video platform announced that it will not direct them to certain types of health and fitness videos, especially those that "idealize" certain body types.

YouTube – which is among the most popular social media apps for teenagers – recommends videos that are similar to what the viewer has seen before.

YouTube first imposed these restrictions in the United States last year and is now expanding them to Europe and around the world.

The new rule is an attempt to prevent teenagers from forming "negative self-beliefs," Dr Garth Graham, who heads YouTube Health, and James Beser, YouTube Youth's director of product management, said in a statement.
