EU decides: Phones will have a universal charger! Companies adapt

All smartphones and tablets will have to use a common charger under an interim European Union agreement reached on Tuesday.

The plan would force all companies - mostly Apple - to make phones, tablets and digital cameras use the USB-C charger, negotiators announced.

The plan, unveiled last year, was provisionally approved on Tuesday and will save consumers about 250m euros ($ 267m) each year, according to the European Commission. The European Parliament and the 27 EU countries must sign the agreement.

Manufacturers of phones and tablets will have to comply with the decision by the fall of 2024. Laptops will have more time to make the change, with negotiators giving laptop manufacturers 40 months after the new rules take effect.

The proposal initially angered Apple, which said it would reduce innovation. But the company is currently testing future iPhone models that use the USB-C charger. Current models of Apple laptops already use the USB-C charger.
