TikTok's CEO will testify before the US Congress in March

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew will testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee at a hearing scheduled for March 23.

He is expected to testify on TikTok's privacy and data security practices, its influence on new users and its relationship with the Chinese Communist Party.

"We've made our concerns clear to TikTok," Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers said in a statement, "now is the time to provide full and honest answers to the people."

The high-profile hearing underscores the growing political risk for TikTok as its negotiations with the US government over a national security deal continue to drag on.

US officials have raised concerns that China could use its laws to pressure TikTok to hand over US user data. These concerns have prompted the US government to ban TikTok from official devices, and more than half of US states have taken similar measures.
